WHEN: Thursday, May 8, 2025
TIME: 10 A.M.
WHERE: The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau
10019 W. Greenfield Ave.
West Allis, WI 53214

BBB is pleased to announce a press conference to recognize “National Scam Survivor Day” and to acknowledge BBB Scam Tracker, BBB’s online scam prevention and reporting tool, as well as the “Scam Survival Toolkit”, a prevention guide which provides people with the knowledge they need to spot future scam attempts.

Key Highlights of the Press Conference:

  • West Allis Mayor Dan Devine. Mayor Devine will speak about the prevalence of scams, what his officem hears from constituents in regard to scams, and the importance of keeping ourselves informed as well  as sharing that knowledge with others; family members, neighbors, and the community.
  • West Allis Police Department. Community officer Brian Saftig will speak about common scams reported to the police and recommended tips when encountering scams.
  • Consumer. Tony Lupo is a Southeastern Wisconsin resident who has reached out to the BBB on several occasions, often calling to verify the legitimacy of a call or text he received, thereby preventing himself from falling victim. He recently thwarted a scam call and called BBB rather than providing information to someone falsely claiming to be with Medicare.
  • Consumer. Lisa Kowalkowski reported a shipping/reshipping scam to BBB’s Scam Tracker in late  2024. She thought that she accepted a legitimate job reshipping packages and was looking forward to making extra money for the upcoming Christmas holiday. She estimates she expected to get paid for her work roughly $9,000. Instead, the “company” stopped communicating with her after she completed all shipping assignments.

“The second Thursday in May each year is marked, ‘National Scam Survivor Day’ which allows the BBB to recognize the brave men and women who come forward to report scams, tell their stories, and help others avoid being impacted”, said Lisa Schiller, Senior Director of Investigations and Media Relations for the Wisconsin Better Business Bureau. “We are pleased to provide important, significant, free tools to people which help to prevent, educate, and recover from scams.”
